Agama implies that which entered (Agatam) the minds of Rshis for the first time (meaning that which has been experienced by the Rshis in their deep meditation). Secondly, that which has gone out (Gatam) from their minds meaning their experience manifested in the outside world. Thirdly, it is that which has become their Matam (opinion). Thus Agama stands for Agatam-Gatam-Matam. Agama can't be understood without a proper knowledge of these three aspects.
